Aims & Objectives

The CIPR (UK) focuses on developing skills, raising awareness, rewarding excellence, supporting their members and giving public relations a voice at the highest levels. 

They are dedicated to providing support for their members and enhancing the professional reputation of the industry, frequently speaking at national and international conferences, providing comments to the press and taking an active part in influencing new regulation concerning the industry, both nationally and internationally. 

Specialists in PR training and experts on conference management and seminars, each semester CIPR offers an extensive programme of training and events covering the most relevant topics to the PR profession. Additionally they offer the post-graduate vocational CIPR Diploma and Advanced Certificate in public relations, and approve PR courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level at universities throughout the UK. 

CIPR's stated aims are:

  • To provide a professional structure for the practice of public relations 
  • To enhance the ability and status of CIPR members as professional practitioners 
  • To represent and serve the professional interests of CIPR members 
  • To provide opportunities for members to meet and exchange views and ideas
  • To raise standards within the profession through the promotion of best practice – including the production of best practice guides, case studies, training events and the continuous professional development scheme 'Developing Excellence'.

Membership of the CIPR UK

There are six grades of membership spanning the different levels of experience and qualifications in public relations. All levels (except Global Affiliate) are open to UK applicants. Membership of the Affiliate, Associate and Member levels is open to UK and Overseas practitioners. Global Affiliate membership is only open to those living and working outside the UK.

  • Student - Student membership is available to anyone studying on an CIPR approved qualification. CIPR students pay a subsidised annual fee and are entitled to upgrade to associate or member as appropriate on completion of 
    their qualification. 

  • Affiliate - Affiliate membership is open to those with less than three years experience or those who are not working in public relations but who would benefit from access to information, advice and networking opportunities.

  • Global Affiliate - Global Affiliate membership provides online access to the benefits of CIPR membership, via the international award-winning website. For full details of this grade, please visit www.cipr.co.uk/globalmember 

  • Associate (ACIPR) - In order to join as an Associate member you will need either an CIPR approved qualification or at least three years full time experience
    in public relations.

  • Member (MCIPR) - You will qualify for Member status if you have ONE of the following: The CIPR Diploma in Public Relations; Four years full time experience in public relations and an CIPR approved qualification; Six years full time experience in public relations plus a commitment to provide a one-year record of your continuous professional development activity twelve months after joining; Ten years full time experience as a senior manager and hold a senior public relations position in a major organisation. Your application must also be sponsored by two current CIPR members (apart from those holding the CIPR Diploma).  As a member you are entitled to use the designatory letters MCIPR 
    and have full voting rights.

  • Fellow (FCIPR) - Fellowship is awarded in recognition of outstanding work in public relations, service to the Institute or both. Fellowships are available by nomination by two full CIPR members or through the completion of the CIPR continuous professional development programme.
