Purpose of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management

It is the purpose of the Global Alliance to unify the public relations and communication profession. We have done so by creating an organisation that currently represents 100,000 plus members world-wide. After only a few years of formal collaboration we can already see the benefits of our endeavour. A universal protocol on ethics has been agreed; work on advocacy and professional credentials is underway. Together, we can bring meaning to our ‘one profession - one voice’ mission.

The Global Alliance will strive toward common standards of practice and become a strong voice for the profession. The founding members have determined that the best way to achieve this objective is to simultaneously support national associations of individual practitioners as core members of the Global Alliance and involve all known other PR and communication associations in its work.

Each member association has two representatives on the Global Alliance Council. All business is conducted on a consensus basis; in the unlikely event of a required vote, each association has one equal vote.

Who can become a member?

All associations that represent public relations and communication professionals are eligible for membership and involvement in work of the Global Alliance. Participation by all - large or small, speciality or multi-discipline - associations, in any of the Global Alliance work groups is strongly encouraged.

What are the levels of membership?

NATIONAL MEMBERS: In keeping with the objective of supporting national public relations and communication management organisations that represent individuals, each national association’s representatives are members of the Global Alliance Council - the primary governing body. An executive board of nine members is elected from this core group.

NON-NATIONAL MEMBERS: All other associations - international, regional confederations or national associations of speciality areas (e.g. educators, students, consultants) - are eligible for membership and may be active members of work groups and committees; as such, these members can advise the Global Alliance Council and attend Council meetings on matters of interest. Non-national members have the same access to the resources and the privileges of the Global Alliance as national members; however, these representatives are not eligible for election to the executive board and do not vote at annual Global Alliance Council meetings - should a vote be required.

PROVISIONAL MEMBERS: When a country does not have a national association nor a multi-disciplinary group of practitioners, speciality associations that represent the largest numbers of practitioners will be eligible for membership in the Global Alliance at this level.

What are the membership fees?

Beginning in January 2003, all national members and provisional members will contribute an annual fee of $500 US* to support the activities of the Global Alliance. All non-national members will contribute $400 US.

* Smaller associations or developing associations that have severely limited financing can make alternative arrangements with the Global Alliance executive board regarding their membership fees. Alternatives may include volunteer resources, in-kind offers, reduced fees, or a combination of the above. The Global Alliance is also pursuing the support of foundations to assist in its quest to involve all associations - particularly those from the developing world - in our work.
