New Leader for PR's Global Alliance

Colin Farrington, director general of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (UK) (CIPR), took up the chairmanship of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management in Cape Town on 15 May, as CIPR plans to host the next World Public relations Festival in London in June 2008 were unveiled.

Colin has been chair-elect for two years and was elected unanimously to that position by the Global Alliance association members in Trieste, Italy in 2005. He has now taken over the two-year chairmanship from Sej Motau of the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA).

In accepting the office at the close of the World Festival in Cape Town Colin said: “My sole aim is to serve, support and strengthen those who are working in public relations associations around the world to build our profession. Our profession needs the leadership of strong associations if it is to put aside the legacies of ‘spin’. We need to focus on our role as reputation builders and managers if we are to see proper recognition of our professionalism. We need to make all our associations relevant and involve all our members.

“Having built up the CIPR over the last eight years, I will be looking now to bring my expertise to the profession on an international scale. I am delighted to have worked with Sej Motau and also to have the full support of the CIPR Board in taking on this hugely important responsibility and opportunity. Within a few months I will be announcing specific goals which will take the Global Alliance to a new position of leadership on the world PR stage.”

Toni Muzi Falconi, first chair of the Global Alliance (2002-2003) and principal advisor to the GA Board said: “It’s great to see the chairmanship of the Global Alliance move again from one continent to the other. Public relations in South Africa certainly differs from the UK, but Sej and Colin are joined by a common goal: to unite the profession in its pursuit of fully responsible, accountable practices and recognition for the contribution it makes to society, as well as to private, social and public sector organisations.

“The GA has undertaken many projects in support of this objective which have so far had a significant impact on the global public relations community. But much, much more needs to be accomplished. It is indeed a daunting task but with Colin’s expert steerage we will achieve even greater results.”
