Alliance newsletter - May 2005
Dear Colleagues and
Friends
As we get ready for our second World
Public Relations Festival (WPRF) to be held on 28-30 June in
Trieste, Italy, (see
www.worldprfestival.org/eng for full details), I would like to
provide an update on key projects and share news.
Priority
projects
Ethics
Ratification of the ethics protocol continues. The goal is to have
all GA members ratify the protocol by the end of 2006. Already the
major institutes and associations have ratified the global code.
Reminders will go out to those who are outstanding.
The German PR association has
produced an interesting document describing how ethical
considerations are managed in Germany. These documents can be found
in the
Ethics Centre of our website.
Curriculum
global standard
Thanks to Professor Anne Gregory FCIPR of the UK, a graduate student
has been identified to lead the benchmarking of curriculum standards
in use around the world. This is the first step in documenting and
analysing current prescriptions for teaching public relations. It is
expected that this will require extensive research and discussion
over the next two years.
In the United States, the Commission
on Public Relations and Education has undertaken a review of the
Port of Entry report which currently serves as the recommended
curriculum in the United States.
Accreditation or personal credentials
Currently eleven institutes offer the APR or equivalent credentials
to their membership. The GA is exploring the possibility of setting
a world standard. A report is expected in Trieste.
Tsunami
project
Project leaders Micheal Morley and Krisnamurthy Sriramesh have
received submissions from several countries and will begin their
analysis. Students from the UK will contribute by analysing and
comparing media coverage of the disaster in Asia and in other parts
of the world. The project leaders will present a report at the WPRF.
DM
Management products
The official launch of the practitioner license, enterprise software
and training modules contained in the DM product takes place in
Trieste at the WPRF. Practitioner licenses will be offered in a draw
for all participants. In addition, the Canadian Public Relations
Society is negotiating to offer the product to its members.

GA News
New member
We welcome the Norwegian Communication Association as the newest
member of the GA. We look forward to your active participation.
NGO
membership at the United Nations
Our application for status as a Non Governmental Organisation within
the Department of Public Information at the UN is now complete. Our
file will be reviewed at the June meeting of the DPI governing body.
Our thanks to John Paluszek for his diligence on this file.
Launch of
Commission on International Public Relations
The Institute for Public Relations based in Florida has announced
the formation of a new commission that will explore what constitutes
International Public relations. The GA, via PRSA, is coordinating
with the Institute with the prospect of helping to inform our
planned Body of Knowledge project. See
www.globalpr.org/news/industry_news_direct.asp?v1=66 for the
full news item.
Your comments and participation in GA
activities are always welcome.
