New Case Studies for The Evolution of Public Relations:
Case Studies from Countries in Transition (2nd edition)

Judy VanSlyke Turk, Linda H. Scanlan, Editors

The original edition of this book, containing 13 cases, was compiled in 1998 for use in a "Teaching the Teachers" workshop in the Baltic States and Baltic Russia, sponsored by the Soros Foundation/Open Society and the U.S. Information Agency. It was published, with two additional cases, in 1999 by the Institute for Public Relations Research and Education, now the Institute for Public Relations, which also will publish this new edition.

The editors seek cases that focus on public relations campaigns in countries where public relations is a developing, evolving discipline or profession. While not limited to these regions, such cases are likely to come from countries in Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union, Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The cases should be useful to the following target audiences for the book:
  • Practitioners from or those working in the regions cited
  • Students from those regions studying public relations
  • Students from more developed markets such as the United States and Europe who are studying international public relations

Cases submitted for review should be organized into the following sections:

  • Executive Summary
  • Problem Statement
  • Background (of the problem and the country), including a summary of research done into the problem
  • Goals and Objectives of the campaign
  • Strategic Tactics and Techniques used in the campaign, including identification of the budget allocated to the campaign
  • Results Achieved
  • Conclusions, including discussion of why the campaign succeeded or failed and recommendations for similar future situations
  • Teaching Notes, a new addition to this edition. Authors may wish to visit cases selected in the Arthur Page Society annual competition for examples http://www.awpagesociety.com/public/news/2003case-awards.html

In selecting cases for publication, the editors will consider

  • Quality and thoroughness of the case presentation
  • Usefulness of the case to public relations professors, students and practitioners
  • Some consideration also will be given to geographic and situational diversity so that cases represent a broad cross-section of public relations practice.

Timeline for Case Selection:

  • August 20, 2003 --Two page proposals summarizing the case must be submitted electronically to Linda H. Scanlan linscan@cox.net
  • September 30, 2003 -- Authors of selected proposals notified that they should proceed to develop the full case study.
  • January 1, 2004 -- Completed case study due in both electronic and hard copy format. (Cases should be 20-30 pages, 8 1/2x11 doubled spaced in Microsoft Word or compatible word processing program.)
  • April 1, 2004 -- Publication date.
